A driving experience "like new"?
I just stumbled across a photo on Pinterest with the caption "Transmission oil flush for a driving experience like new!"
For a mechanic changing the transmission fluid in a car, it goes without saying that fluids in machines need to be replaced from time to time in order to maintain a "like new" driving experience for as long as possible.
Even though the human body is far more complex than the most complicated machine in the world, it too needs to get rid of impurities from time to time that cannot be disposed of during normal functioning. In this context, we talk about "purification, detoxification" or, in modern parlance, simply "detox." However, these terms are somewhat misleading, as normally neither toxins nor waste products in the traditional sense accumulate in our bodies.
And yet there is definitely something to be said for "purifying and detoxifying to develop a new attitude towards life"!
Why is that?
Modern eating habits and lifestyles place considerable demands on our bodies. We generally eat too much, too quickly, too often, too late, too much sugar, too much salt, and too much fat. "Great!" you might think, and be tempted to skip ahead.
But maybe you're also interested in what this provocative sentence is all about!
In this blog, I would like to explain the challenges that modern lifestyles pose to our bodies. Over hundreds of thousands of years, our bodies have adapted optimally to their environment and developed certain strategies to survive even in exceptional situations.
If the Homo sapiens species had not developed a mechanism to survive prolonged periods of hunger, humanity would have died out long ago. The processes that take place during this so-called "fasting mode" are now the focus of aging research. Many studies point to the life-prolonging effects of regular fasting = detoxification and an improved immune response in the body.
In addition to fasting mode, the body has another way of storing energy: in times of food abundance—such as after a successful hunt or at harvest time—excess energy can be stored in the form of fat. The body can draw on this fat when there is not enough energy available from food for muscle activity or heat production.
Just a few decades ago, our bodies regularly drew on these energy reserves (if available). Everyone had to move around a lot more in their everyday lives than the average person does today. The range of food available was also much more limited than it is today, both in terms of choice and where and when it could be purchased. Food also cost more in relation to earnings than it does today.
- Whereas sweets, a soft drink, and a sausage roll used to be the exception, today they are what people quickly buy as a snack as soon as they feel the slightest hint of hunger. Supermarket shelves are full of semi-finished and finished products that usually contain few natural ingredients. So, without realizing it, we consume a lot of energy. If this energy is not burned off through exercise, it is converted into fat.
- In addition, the proportion of vegetables, whole grain products, and ripe fruit in our diet is declining. Fiber and minerals, which help the body eliminate excess acids and toxins, are not present in sufficient quantities.
- Often, the most important thing for a well-functioning metabolism is missing: enough water. Not soft drinks, coffee, beer, or black tea, no—just water!
- Artificial flavors, flavor enhancers, high fat, sugar, and salt content, even in products where we would not expect it, place additional strain on our metabolism.
Our bodies have a wide range of regulatory mechanisms to maintain balance and thus stay healthy. Normally, they cleanse and regenerate themselves between meals, especially at night. That is, if we give them the chance to do so!
Since this is often not the case in modern life, it makes sense to schedule and carry out regular servicing—with an oil change—just like with a car.
This can be done in a variety of ways: by having one soup day per month, occasionally skipping dinner, 18:6 intermittent fasting, 5:2, 6/1, a few days of alkaline fasting, therapeutic fasting, etc. – ideally combined with increased exercise in nature. This can also be fun – just as eating natural foods can be thoroughly enjoyable!!
This allows the natural mechanisms that regenerate cells and cleanse fluids in the body to take place, giving us a new lease on life. The elasticity of the fascia, muscles, and tendons is maintained, performance is increased, the complexion becomes clearer, and complaints caused by inflammatory processes improve.
Incidentally, many people who regularly detoxify in whatever way also notice that they can concentrate better, their minds are more alert, and their emotional state is more balanced.
